Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a 16oz container last me?

That entirely depends on the dose you are feeding. A 16oz container will last 95 days for a dog up to 25lb at a serving of 5ml/day. A 16oz container will last a 50lb dog 47 days and so on. Larger doses will mean your container lasts less time for you.

Why does your label say don't feed this product to pregnant or lactating animals or animals with bleeding issues?

Smart Earth Camelina Oil is approved by Health Canada as an LRVP - a Low Risk Veterinary Supplement for horses and dogs. Health Canada has labeling guidelines for these products and we are required to comply, even though our camelina oil is considered a LOW RISK product.

Despite the fact that there is no evidence camelina oil creates harm or risk to lactating animals or animals with bleeding issues, because there are no long term, documented, studies to the contrary, these risk statements are mandatory.

Is there any clinical research showing that your product works?

There has not been any clinical research on dogs fed camelina oil, to our knowledge. However, there are many articles on the health benefits of alpha-linolenic and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in both animals and humans. We do have a research summary of the apparent benefits of adding Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids of the type found in Camelina to the diet of dogs. We can send you this research sample on request.

What's the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in Camelina oil?

Camelina oil is high in ALA with a 2.4:1 ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s.

Is your camelina organic

We contract our camelina production to responsible conventional farmers in Saskatchewan. At present we do not have certified organic growers. Camelina has the following herbicides registered for use, but not all farmers will use herbicides:

Assure II - for grassy weeds, at early stage of growth
Round-Up WeatherMax - as a desiccant pre-harvest

When used according to label directions camelina plants will not exceed maximum herbicide residue levels, and herbicide residue will not carry over into the oil.

Your label says for long-term storage the product needs to be kepts at 5 degrees C. How long is the oil stable at 20C?

The oil is fine to consume after 2 years at 20C (70F) if unopened and stored in the dark, but not as fresh as it could be. It depends on whether it has been exposed to air and light too. As a general rule we say our oil is fine after 1 year if opened and at room temperature not kept in the dark. The peroxide value is an indication of oxidation stability. Our oil must have a pv of less than 5 when freshly crushed. This value increases as it oxidizes. A pv of >20 is not recommended. We consider long term storage is 2 years at 5C (40F) but at least 5 years if kept frozen. Hope this helps.

Can you feed camelina oil to cats and dogs?

Yes. Dogs love it! Dog dose: 5 mL (1 teaspoon) per 25 lb body weight) once daily. Cats - just a drizzle on their food.

Is it OK for human consumption?

Our non-GMO cold-pressed Camelina oil is Health Canada approved as a veterinary supplement for horses and for dogs. As a high omega oil it is processed in a food-grade facility and it has been sold to other buyers for human consumption. But we presently are not marketing it as such or selling it in the retail grocery store.

Feeding Instructions

5ml (1 teaspoon) for each 25lb of body weight – divided into 2x/day if possible. This is to be given orally with or without food.

We recommend that you start with a smaller amount and work up to your target measure. Too much oil too quickly can cause loosen stool.

Warning

❌ Not for use with pregnant or lactating animals, or animals with bleeding disorders.
✔️ If in doubt consult a veterinarian prior to using this product.

Kinship Kennels Founder Carlene Sarvas Endorses Smart Earth Camelina Oil

"Hi, my name is Carlene Sarvas. I'm a breeder of Fieldbread Springer Spaniels. If you know Springer Spaniels, they play hard and they hunt even harder. When they're outdoors they are always moving, it's kind of exhausting just watching them. As a breeder and a dog owner I'm very aware of keeping their joints healthy. That's why, here at Kinship Kennels we choose to use Smart Earth's Omega 3 Camelina supplement. It's been scientifically proven that Omega 3's can reduce inflammation and support joint mobility."
